Veterans Agriculture

As Florida farmers retire at a rate that outpaces the rate that younger farmers are beginning agriculture careers, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried believes that veterans are uniquely positioned to fill this gap in Florida’s agriculture industry. Additionally, meaningful agriculture careers can provide veterans with the purpose that some struggle to regain after leaving the military.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) actively promotes and supports initiatives that facilitate Florida veterans' entry into agriculture. Below is a list of links to these initiatives:

Veterans Florida Agriculture Program

The Veterans Florida Agriculture Program (VFAP) is a nine-month internship that helps veterans transition into sustainable careers in Florida’s agriculture industry. The program provides veterans with a comprehensive learning experience that gives them the knowledge and skills they need to be competitive.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides resources for veterans who are interested in agriculture careers. Topics range from employment to education to entrepreneurship. FDACS encourages veterans interested in starting agriculture careers to utilize these resources.

Florida Agriculture Clearinghouse

The Florida Agriculture Clearinghouse connects Florida farmers and consumers with state-based agriculture resources and organizations. Florida veterans who are interested in starting or advancing their agriculture careers are encouraged to engage with these organizations.
