Smart Snacks
All food and beverages sold on school campuses during the school day are required to meet practical, science-based nutrition standards that ensure children are offered access to more nutritious items with focus on lean meats, lower fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and whole grain and whole grain-rich foods.
The Smart Snack Standards apply to all food and beverages sold separate from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child Nutrition Programs and include foods sold in vending machines, school stores, school food service a la carte lines, and any other on-campus venues permitting the sale of foods and beverages to students. Foods and beverages sold 30 minutes after the end of the school day are not subject to the Smart Snack Standards.
