Tallahassee, Fla. – At today’s meeting of the Florida Cabinet, Commissioner Nicole “Nikki” Fried proposed that the lights illuminating the Florida State Capitol building glow orange during the week of February 10th to honor the memory of the 17 students and staff lost in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre almost one year ago.
“As we approach the anniversary of a horrific tragedy in our state’s history, we must remember the victims, and ensure that the memories of those seventeen lives are honored,” stated Commissioner Nikki Fried. “This week of orange will serve as a symbol of hope and token of respect to the families of the victims, and a reminder of our solemn responsibility to take seriously the threat of gun violence.”
The motion carried unanimously, and Commissioner Fried will work with the Florida Department of Management Services to implement the change in lighting.
