Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, the U.S. Senate voted 54-41 to terminate the national emergency President Trump declared in February to obtain border wall funding previously rejected by Congress. The emergency declaration diverted $3.6 billion in Department of Defense funding away from important military projects, including rebuilding Tyndall Air Force Base. Commissioner Nicole “Nikki” Fried offered the following statement:
“Today, the U.S. Senate put our country and our military before party. This vote benefits Florida’s military families and the entire region, which is still rebuilding and recovering after Hurricane Michael. Tyndall Air Force Base is fundamental to the Panhandle economy and community. Generations of families who have answered the call to serve their nation have served at this base, and will continue to serve for years to come. The reconstruction of Tyndall must be a top priority, and that’s where this federal funding belongs.”
